Instagram’s Threads App to Launch on July 6 Amid Mass Exodus to Elon Musk’s Twitter

In response to the widespread backlash against Elon Musk’s Twitter, Meta has announced the launch of Threads, a new app that aims to rival Twitter. Threads, which is linked to Instagram, made its debut in the Apple app store on Tuesday and is set to officially launch on Thursday. Meta has created a countdown website to generate anticipation for the release.

Described as a “text-based conversation” app, Threads is positioned as a platform where communities can come together to discuss various topics of interest. Users will have the opportunity to follow and connect with their favorite creators, engage in conversations, and share their ideas and creativity with others. The app’s user interface appears to bear similarities to Twitter, featuring features such as reposting, liking, and the ability to limit replies to posts.

Interestingly, the app shares its name with an earlier app launched by Meta in 2019 to compete with Snapchat, although the original Threads app was eventually abandoned. Meta retained the branding and repurposed it for their Twitter rival.

A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment on the upcoming launch. Meta will be joining a growing list of platforms, including BlueSky and Mastodon, that are vying to replace Twitter since Elon Musk assumed ownership late last year, making the platform less accessible for its estimated 250 million users.

Recently, Twitter implemented changes such as requiring users to log in to view the site and imposing limits on unverified accounts, restricting their ability to view tweets. These moves have prompted users to seek alternative platforms. Twitter also announced that its Tweetdeck product, primarily used by businesses and news organizations, will only be accessible to users who subscribe to Twitter Blue.

Musk’s moderation decisions, including lifting bans on far-right accounts, as well as the increasing instability of the platform, have led to advertisers reducing or pausing their spending on Twitter. BlueSky experienced a surge in demand after Twitter implemented its rate limit change, leading to a temporary pause in new sign-ups.

Privacy concerns may also be a factor influencing users’ decisions to switch to Meta’s Twitter replacement. Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder currently involved in the development of BlueSky, shared a screenshot of Threads’ app privacy information, raising questions about data collection practices. Threads has the potential to collect various types of user data, including health information, financial details, contact information, browsing history, location, and purchases.

In comparison, BlueSky is expected to collect contact information, user content, and identifiers, while Twitter tracks user data related to purchases, contact information, location, contacts, and browsing history.
