Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced that the social media platform will be removing inactive accounts that have been dormant for several years. Musk emphasized the importance of freeing up abandoned handles in a tweet on Monday. However, he did not provide specific details on when this account removal process will begin.

It remains unclear how Twitter users will be able to access archived accounts, if at all. Additionally, Musk mentioned that users may see a decline in their follower count as inactive accounts are removed.

Twitter’s policy states that users should log in to their accounts at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent removal due to prolonged inactivity.

In a recent incident, Musk threatened to reassign National Public Radio’s Twitter account to another company after the broadcaster ceased posting content to protest a Twitter label implying government involvement in its editorial content.

Last month, Twitter removed the verified blue tick from the profiles of numerous individuals, including celebrities, journalists, and prominent politicians.

Musk has integrated account verification into Twitter’s Blue subscription, aiming to address the issue of bot accounts on the platform.
