Sony’s PSVR2 Headset Sales Fall Short of Expectations

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Sony has reportedly sold around 270,000 PSVR2 headsets since its launch on February 22nd until the end of March. While this figure may seem lower than expected, it is important to note that the rising costs of living, interest rates, and layoffs may have contributed to these lower unit sales figures.

Last year, Sony had set a goal of producing approximately 2 million units during the PSVR2’s launch window. However, despite these lower than expected sales figures, Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki remains optimistic that the PSVR2 will surpass the roughly 5 million sales of the original PlayStation VR goggles over its lifetime on the market.

Insider Gaming sources have revealed that Sony is currently developing the PlayStation 5 Pro with a tentative release date during the holiday season of 2024, which could help bolster sales of the PSVR2. Additionally, Sony is expecting a massive FY23 for console units sold of around 30.5 million units, which is almost double its current PlayStation 5 market.

While virtual reality in general has seemingly been suffering lately, with many companies involved in the metaverse cutting back on development, it is important to remember that the PSVR2 is still a new product. Some industry experts believe that a price cut may be necessary to help boost sales and prevent a complete disaster for the product. However, it is important to remain optimistic about the future of virtual reality and the potential for growth in this exciting and rapidly evolving industry.
