Li-Fi, the Light-Based Networking Standard, Published: 100 Times Faster Than Wi-Fi
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has added 802.11bb as a standard for light-based wireless communication. The publication of the standard has been welcomed by global Li-Fi companies as it will accelerate the introduction and adoption of the data transmission technology.
The advantages of using light instead of radio frequencies (RF) have been emphasized by Li-Fi advocates such as pureLiFi, Fraunhofer HHI, and the Light Communications 802.11bb Task Group. Li-Fi is said to provide “faster, more reliable wireless communication with unique security compared to traditional technologies like Wi-Fi and 5G.” With the publication of the IEEE 802.11bb Li-Fi standard, it is hoped that the interoperability between successful Wi-Fi and Li-Fi systems will be fully addressed.

Of course, Li-Fi will not replace Wi-Fi, 5G, or wired networks altogether. Radio waves still have a distinct advantage in transmitting over long distances and through opaque objects. Instead, efforts should focus on harnessing the advantages of Li-Fi where possible, such as in classrooms and office spaces.

The shining moment of Li-Fi (pun intended) lies not only in its fast theoretical speeds of up to 224 Gbps. Dominic Schulz from Fraunhofer highlights that it provides higher reliability, lower latency, and less jitter due to operating in a dedicated optical spectrum. Additionally, Schulz states that “the line-of-sight propagation of light enhances security by preventing wall penetration, reducing the risk of interference and covert listening, and enabling centimeter-accurate indoor navigation.”
With the publication of the IEEE 802.11bb standard, manufacturers can have greater confidence in the ecosystem and start integrating the technology when appropriate. pureLiFi, one of the key players in Li-Fi, has already prepared its Light Antenna ONE module for integration into connected devices. This 14.5mm-long component (depicted above and at the top) is currently provided to OEMs for evaluation. The company claims in its promotional materials that Li-Fi is preferred over Wi-Fi, offering more connections without congestion, increased security and privacy, and heavy lifting for high-bandwidth tasks.
Now, we can expect to see a much wider range of Li-Fi network devices and user devices supporting the standard leading up to and at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) between now and next February.
