Riot Games Announces Major Layoffs, Affecting 530 Employees
Riot Games, known for popular titles like League of Legends and Valorant, has announced significant layoffs, impacting around 11% of its workforce.
In a detailed blog post, CEO A. Dylan Jadeja took responsibility for the decisions leading to the layoffs. He cited the company’s expansion efforts since 2019, aimed at creating new experiences and broadening its portfolio, which led to rapid staff growth. However, Riot Games now faces challenges due to a lack of focus and unsustainable costs.
Strategic Shifts and Cost Reduction Efforts
Jadeja noted that many of Riot Games’ significant investments have not yielded the expected returns. With rising costs posing a threat to the core business, the company found it crucial to reevaluate its strategy. Despite attempts to mitigate the situation through project reassignments, hiring slowdowns, and freezes, layoffs became inevitable.
Affected employees will receive comprehensive support, including severance pay, bonuses, health benefits, and career assistance. The restructuring will also influence some of projects, with a reduced team and refocused efforts on the ‘Path of Champions’ PvE game mode in Legends of Runeterra, and the sunsetting of Riot Forge post-Bandle Tale release.
Commitment to Core Games and Future Projects
Despite the layoffs, Riot Games remains committed to its flagship games and is investing in upcoming projects like Project L, Arcane Season 2, and more. The company aims to concentrate on community-driven content and enhancements for its key titles.
Riot Games’ layoffs add to a growing list of game industry cutbacks this year, including Unity’s 25% workforce reduction and Thunderful’s 20% staff layoff. The gaming industry continues to face significant challenges, leading to tough decisions for many companies.
