Star Citizen, the science fiction-themed space trading, combat simulation, and RPG developed by Cloud Imperium Games, continues to stand out with its massive crowdfunding campaign even after over a decade since its inception. Despite more than ten years passing since its foundation in 2010 and the start of production in 2011, Star Citizen remains in the spotlight due to its ongoing successful crowdfunding efforts.

Last year around the same time, Star Citizen managed to secure nearly half a billion dollars in funding. Now, after 11 months and an additional $100 million in funding, Star Citizen has surpassed $600 million in total funds raised. May of 2023 has been the most active month for crowdfunding, with over $20 million raised. The reason behind this surge could be attributed to the introduction of a free-to-play event granting access to almost everything within the game.

The year 2023 has been a period of significant progress for Star Citizen and Cloud Imperium Games. In March, Cloud Imperium Games introduced Alpha 3.18, the largest update for the game to date. This update brought long-awaited features such as Persistent Entity Streaming, salvage mechanics, cargo reorganization, and more.

In May, along with the release of the next quarterly content update, Alpha 3.19, the city of Lorville underwent substantial revisions. Process improvements for new players’ experiences were implemented, and enhanced tractor beam interactions were introduced. Despite all these updates, Star Citizen still lacks an official release date. Additionally, the roadmap for future updates shows that Alpha 3.20 for the Persistent Universe section will be arriving soon. This update, scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2023, will feature a new low-Earth orbit station above Crusader, improved cargo interactions, missions, and enhancements for ground vehicles.
