Nvidia Constructs AI Supercomputer in Israel to Meet Soaring Demand

Nvidia has announced its plans to build a highly specialized supercomputer for generative AI tasks in Israel, aiming to create one of the world’s fastest high-performance systems. Dubbed Israel-1, the supercomputer has been in development for the past 18 months, with an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars. It is set to be deployed at Nvidia’s data center in Israel.

Israel-1 will serve as a blueprint and testbed for Nvidia Spectrum-X, a networking platform designed to enhance the performance and efficiency of Ethernet-based AI clouds. The company’s objective is to enable developers to build software-defined, cloud-native AI applications while reducing the runtime of large-scale transformer-based generative AI models.

Considered one of Nvidia’s most significant projects in recent years, Israel-1 reportedly played a central role during CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Israel last month. The supercomputer is expected to deliver a performance of up to eight exaflops, positioning it among the fastest AI supercomputers globally. Engineers from the Israeli high-performance chip design firm Mellanox Technologies, which Nvidia acquired for nearly $7 billion (£6 billion) in 2019, were responsible for Israel-1’s design.

Nvidia’s chips play a critical role in the flourishing AI economy, as evidenced by the company’s recent financial performance. In the first quarter, Nvidia reported revenues that significantly exceeded analysts’ expectations, with second-quarter revenue predicted to be 50 percent higher than analysts’ estimates, reflecting an impressive annual growth rate of 64 percent.

The data center infrastructure segment proved to be Nvidia’s largest and fastest-growing revenue stream, increasing by 14 percent in the first quarter. Gilad Shainer, Nvidia’s Senior Vice President of Networking, emphasized the transformative nature of generative AI technologies, which compel enterprises to push the boundaries of data center performance in the pursuit of a competitive edge.

Nvidia Spectrum-X, Shainer explained, represents a new class of Ethernet networking that overcomes obstacles for next-generation AI workloads capable of revolutionizing entire industries.

The Israel-1 system is projected to become partially operational by the end of this year, offering advanced AI training capabilities to the 800 start-ups that Nvidia collaborates with in Israel. Shainer also mentioned the possibility of extending the system’s collaboration to partners outside Israel in the future.
