Microsoft has acknowledged reports of VPN connection failures following the installation of the April 2024 Windows 11 update. The KB5036893 security update, released on April 9th for all supported Windows 11 versions, has triggered issues specifically with VPN connections utilizing TPM-backed certificates.

According to Reddit user Flo-TPG, users encountering the problem have received a “certificate could not be found” error when attempting to establish VPN connections. Microsoft has issued a warning acknowledging these reports and has stated that it is actively investigating the matter. Further updates and information are expected to be provided in the coming days.

For affected users, the current workaround is to uninstall the KB5036893 update. However, Microsoft has assured users that it is actively working on a resolution and plans to address the issue in an upcoming release. This suggests that a hotfix may be imminent.

These VPN issues mark another instance of challenges with Windows updates, reminiscent of the major speed issues experienced by L2TP/IPsec VPN connections in Windows 11 nearly a year ago. While Microsoft maintains a Windows Insider program aimed at identifying and addressing bugs in early versions of updates, security patches can still lead to unexpected issues, as seen in these recent VPN incidents.
