Meta announces goodbye to NFTs on Facebook and Instagram
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has decided to reduce NFT support on its platforms, Facebook and Instagram. Despite taking strong steps to promote the adoption of digital collections, this move has raised doubts about the future of NFTs, as it comes just over a year after these initiatives.
Stephane Kasriel, Meta’s President of Commerce and Financial Technologies, announced the decision on Twitter, stating that the company is closely examining its priorities to focus on supporting creators, people, and businesses through other means, reducing digital collection products (NFTs) for the time being. Meta will focus on revenue-generating areas such as Reels.
NFTs are unique digital assets that use blockchain technology to verify ownership and originality. They can include various digital content such as art, music, videos, and tweets. NFTs were a source of income for digital content creators and represented rare digital assets for collectors. Mark Zuckerberg suggested that NFTs could play a role in Meta’s metaverse plans, allowing users to carry their avatars’ clothing as NFTs between different locations. However, it seems that neither Meta’s NFT plans nor metaverse plans have been successful.

Meanwhile, Meta is going through a comprehensive restructuring process, during which companies often shut down or sideline non-profitable ventures. Zuckerberg described 2023 as the “year of productivity” and laid off tens of thousands of people. However, it is unclear whether NFTs on the platforms will be suddenly removed without any roadmap.
In summary, Meta’s decision to reduce NFT support on Facebook and Instagram raises doubts about the future of NFTs. The company will focus on revenue-generating areas, such as Reels, and prioritizing support for creators, people, and businesses.
