Microsoft unveiled its new flagship convertible laptop, the Surface Laptop Studio 2, at a launch event in New York. The Laptop Studio 2 retains the overall design and functionality of its predecessor, including the forward-foldable 14.4-inch touchscreen that makes it a more touch-friendly device. However, in terms of hardware, it is now significantly more powerful and, yes, still quite expensive.

As mentioned earlier, the new Surface Laptop Studio 2 closely resembles its predecessor in terms of design and functionality, including the forward-foldable 14.4-inch screen. On the hardware side, it features Intel’s 13th Generation processors, specifically the i7 H-series, and includes Nvidia RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 graphics cards. The device also comes with an Intel Neural Processing Unit (NPU), the first of its kind in a Windows laptop.

This NPU unit can be thought of as a hardware accelerator for local artificial intelligence tasks. In the future, we can expect to see NPUs in most computers, and they will become a central focus in the years ahead.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 can be configured with up to 2TB of storage and 64GB of RAM. Microsoft claims it is the “most powerful Surface we’ve ever made,” promising twice the performance of its predecessor. The Studio 2 also offers some new connectivity options: two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a microSD card reader, and the Surface Slim Pen 2. Additionally, it features a customizable and more responsive touchpad that Microsoft calls “the most comprehensive touch surface on any laptop.”

Release Date and Price for the Surface Laptop Studio 2 in 2023:

The 2023 model Surface Laptop Studio 2 will be available for purchase starting from October 3rd. The starting price for the device is $1,999, but depending on the configuration, it can go up to $3,699.

It’s worth noting that there have been recent changes in Microsoft’s leadership. Panos Panay, who was responsible for both Windows and Surface, announced his departure from the company earlier this week. Panay has been one of the key figures driving Microsoft’s vision for versatile devices in recent years. Additionally, Panay was absent from the event, and Brett Ostrum, the leader of the Surface product team, made the announcements instead. Yusuf Mehdi has taken over as the new head of Windows and Surface, and we may see some differences in the company’s hardware direction in the future.
