Stray

The cat game Stray is becoming an animated film.

BlueTwelve Studio’s popular cat-focused adventure game, Stray, is getting a real animated film adaptation. Annapurna, the game’s original publisher, decided to make an animated film adaptation of Stray following the surprise success of their first animated film, Nimona, on Netflix.

The creative team behind the Stray animated film is still under wraps, but Robert Baird, the President of Annapurna Animation, mentioned that the film is in active development and will be the “best hopepunk movie ever made.” Baird describes “hopepunk” as a narrative concept that sees optimism as a form of resistance against tyranny. This concept essentially defines the emotional tone of the game, so Annapurna seems to be on the right track. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the game’s companion drone, B-12, will be a significant part of the film. This duo will handle much of the film’s comedic aspect.

The original game was released last year and allowed players to control a curious cat in a cyberpunk environment. Stray was praised for giving players a cat’s perspective of the world and became a hit on nearly every platform. As for Annapurna, the Stray adaptation is just one of several forward-looking moves they’ve made.

The company’s animation branch has announced several more films and teased many others. Chris Wedge, the creator of Ice Age, will direct a film called FOO, an acronym for Sudanese Out of Office. Nick Bruno, the assistant director of Nimona, has signed on to direct an untitled project described as “high-concept” and “Spielberg-esque.”

The company also hinted that other games under its umbrella could receive film adaptations. Their list of other games includes Twelve Minutes, a time-loop thriller starring Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy, the sci-fi action-adventure game Outer Wilds, and the narrative mystery Kentucky Route Zero, among others. In fact, each of these has the potential to be a compelling film.
