The Global Gaming Market: Trends and Statistics in 2023

The number of gamers worldwide is on the rise, with half of the world’s population now playing video games. However, despite this growth, only a small minority is responsible for the majority of the market’s spending. According to a recent report by DFC Intelligence, there are currently 3.7 billion gaming consumers globally, and the number has increased by 700 million in the last three years. But the global gamers’ spending isn’t particularly impressive, with around 10% or 370 million of the 3.7 billion gamers accounting for most of the industry’s revenue.

Interestingly, the statistics don’t end there. Only 300 million people are said to play games on PCs or consoles, while 92% of gamers prefer mobile devices. DFC notes that the traditional PC or console gaming crowd continues to grow, however. When it comes to console players, the US dominates the market with over 100 million consumers, followed by Japan, the UK, and Ireland, each with around 20 million.

So, how much revenue does the gaming market generate? Precise figures are hard to come by, but analysts such as Newzoo estimate that gaming earned $184.4 billion in 2022, excluding mobile advertising revenue and gambling/betting. Of this total, mobile games accounted for 50% or $92.2 billion, while console games generated $51.8 billion (28%), PC games generated $38.2 billion (21%), and browser games generated $2.3 billion (1%).
