Square Enix to Pursue Multiplatform Strategy After Profit Decline

Square Enix has unveiled plans for a significant company overhaul in response to declining profits. Despite a 2.6% increase in sales in the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes video games, profit plummeted by 15.8% for the financial year ending March 31, 2024. Notably, despite the release of titles like Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Foamstars, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix recorded a substantial operating loss of approximately $51.9 million in the HD games subcategory.

Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, both PlayStation 5 exclusives, failed to meet profit expectations, contributing to Square Enix’s financial struggles. In response, the company announced the “Square Enix Reboots and Awakens” initiative, a three-year plan focused on long-term growth. A key aspect of this strategy involves a shift to a multiplatform approach, with Square Enix intending to aggressively pursue releases across Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.

This move marks a departure from the PlayStation exclusivity traditionally associated with mainline Final Fantasy games, although specific details beyond Final Fantasy 16‘s upcoming PC launch remain undisclosed. Additionally, Square Enix aims to prioritize quality over quantity, focusing on delivering “ensured fun” experiences to players.

Despite these challenges, Square Enix remains committed to its major franchises, with upcoming releases including Dawntrail, the expansion for Final Fantasy 14, Kingdom Hearts 4, the third game in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy, and Dragon Quest 12. The company’s willingness to adapt its strategy reflects its determination to navigate the evolving landscape of the gaming industry and secure future success.
