Apple has introduced the new A17 Pro chip, the most powerful mobile processor, in its recently unveiled iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models. The Apple A17 Pro not only boasts powerful CPU features but also advanced GPU capabilities, including features like ray tracing and MetalFX enhancements. Leveraging this processing power, Apple has officially announced console games coming to the iPhone 15 Pro series.

Console games coming to iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

Apple has partnered with Ubisoft and Capcom to bring AAA experiences like Resident Evil IV Remake and Resident Evil VIII Village to iPhone gamers by the end of this year. Additionally, Death Stranding is also set to launch for the iPhone 15 Pro series later this year. According to Apple’s official statement:

Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, and Death Stranding are coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max later this year. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available in the first half of 2024. Apple also showcased The Division: Resurgence and Gensin Impact games, which are slated to arrive on iPhone 15 Pro models in 2024.

What makes Apple A17 Pro special?

The Apple A17 Pro features a total of 6-core CPU and introduces a new shader architecture designed by Apple, offering up to 20% higher performance compared to the previous generation. Significant improvements have been made in efficiency and mesh shading sections. The chip boasts a 16-core neural processing unit capable of performing up to 35 trillion operations per second, with native AV1 support.,

On the GPU side, Apple claims to have made its biggest change yet. The A17 Pro GPU features six cores and is up to 20% faster than the previous model. The GPU supports mesh shading, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and more. Ray tracing on the A17 Pro is four times faster than the software-based option found in the A16 Bionic. The neural processing unit also supports graphics processing for enhancements.

Before moving on to the A17 Pro, it’s worth noting that Samsung introduced its hardware-accelerated ray tracing solution for the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year, utilizing AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture for ray tracing and graphics capabilities. The Galaxy S24 series has transitioned to RDNA 3.

Continuing, the A17 Pro offers 4 times faster performance in ray tracing applications. Apple demonstrated a comparison between software-based and hardware-accelerated ray tracing demos. The software-based solution yielded less than 10 FPS, while the hardware-accelerated ray tracing consistently delivered 30 FPS.

Apple also announced support for some of the best control devices on the market, such as the PS5’s DualSense controller. Another significant feature coming to the iPhone 15 Pro is MetalFX enhancement support. Upgrade technologies have gained widespread acceptance in the PC and console gaming arenas. Apple claims that by using MetalFX, the iPhone 15 Pro series will not only run faster but also achieve high frame rates in games while consuming less power. This will also contribute positively to battery life.

MetalFX enhancement technology utilizes both GPU cores and 16-core Neural Engine cores with up to 35 TOPs of nominal AI processing power, doubling the performance compared to the previous generation. All of these factors make the A17 Pro the most powerful chip in the smartphone world. It remains to be seen how the competition will respond.
