Fallout 4’s New Update Spells Modding Nightmare: Here Are the Challenges Players Face!

Developer Bethesda has released the new-gen update for Fallout 4 today, unfortunately causing one of the game’s most crucial mods to break.

In fact, many mods were affected by this update, including the Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE). As announced on the Nexus Mods page, F4SE is a mod source that enhances the game’s coding abilities without permanent side effects. Many mods require this project to function properly, so modifying Fallout 4 without F4SE becomes quite complicated.

In a post shared by F4SE developer ianpatt, he states, “The April 25, 2024 Fallout 4 update (version 1.10.980 and later) broke the F4SE project and all remaining code modding process, just like the ‘Anniversary Edition’ patch of Skyrim did.” He adds, “I’m currently working on an update, and I’m not sure when it will be released. I also don’t know if there are any critical technical issues preventing me from updating. Please do not email me about such questions.”

Eight years after the game’s initial release, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 new-gen update brings numerous performance improvements and Creation Club content. This update also marks a significant milestone for the series, which gained massive popularity following the release of the Prime Video series. However, fans have already found ways to navigate around the update to ensure their enjoyment remains intact.

The comments section of F4SE on Nexus Mods is filled with explanations on how users can disable automatic updates and even roll back updates they’ve made. User Destructionares provides a detailed guide on how to revert the update.

Additionally, GameRevolution and Nexus Mods have also shared statements for those who have not yet updated. Unfortunately, the only way to continue playing the game with mods for now is to roll back the update, or if you’re lucky enough, to not have updated at all.

While players have found a way around it, it’s not just small mods that have been affected by the update. The Fallout London mod, which has become hugely popular recently and adds new story elements and areas to the game, was supposed to be released this week under normal circumstances. However, after the announcement of Fallout 4’s update, developer Team Folon had to postpone the project. There is no new release date yet, and it’s unknown when they will be able to adapt to Bethesda’s changes.
