ESA President’s Decision: Stanley Pierre-Louis Confirms E3’s Permanent Closure
Pierre-Louis stated that bidding farewell to E3 is a challenging task, acknowledging the industry’s passion for the event. However, he emphasized that concluding E3 is the right decision in light of new opportunities for the industry to engage with fans and partners. The ESA later confirmed via social media that E3 has indeed reached its conclusion, expressing gratitude to attendees for the memories.
The final blow to E3 came with the cancellation of E3 2023, both in-person and virtually, as announced in March. Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards now stand as the primary industry leaders following E3’s demise. This marks the end of a 27-year legacy, with the last in-person E3 occurring in 2019 and the final online event in 2021 due to the global pandemic.

The decline of E3 was evident as major publishers, starting with Sony, withdrew from the event, opting to host their exclusive industry events. While trade shows may be evolving, industry events like The Game Awards continue to play a role in announcements and showcases, albeit with criticisms for being overly focused on announcements rather than celebrating developers and actors.
