Sony Accepts 10 Year Call of Duty Agreement with Microsoft
Following the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Sony has agreed to a 10-year deal with Microsoft to keep the Call of Duty franchise on PlayStation. Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO, stated that Sony and Microsoft have reached a “binding agreement” to retain Call of Duty on PlayStation.
From Day One of this acquisition, we’ve been committed to addressing the concerns of regulators, platform and game developers, and consumers. Even after we cross the finish line for this deal’s approval, we will remain focused on ensuring that Call of Duty remains available on… https://t.co/hMWjC58wRi

This resolves a fierce battle that has been ongoing between the two companies throughout the past year, after Microsoft announced its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard in January 2022.
While Microsoft’s initial announcement did not mention a 10-year deal for Call of Duty on PlayStation, Kari Perez, Global Communications Lead at Xbox, confirmed the 10-year commitment. Perez later confirmed that the agreement is solely for Call of Duty. This makes the deal similar to the 10-year agreement between Microsoft and Nintendo, but distinct from Microsoft’s various agreements with Nvidia and other cloud gaming platforms to bring Call of Duty and other Xbox/Activision games to competing services.
The original offer made by Microsoft to Sony in January 2022 included keeping “future versions of the Call of Duty series or any other existing Activision console titles on Sony until at least December 31, 2027.” The terms of the agreement have clearly changed since that initial proposal, now limited to a 10-year extension specifically for Call of Duty.

With this agreement between Sony and Microsoft, the presence of the Call of Duty series on PlayStation has been secured. Although the duration of the agreement has not been disclosed, it is expected to be valid for 10 years, similar to the deal with Nintendo. Upon the completion of the Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft will gain ownership of significant brands such as Overwatch, Call of Duty, Diablo, and Crash. In the coming years, Call of Duty will also be available on Nintendo platforms and Nvidia cloud services, expanding beyond PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
