This week, on September 26, the account changed its header image. The new image reads “The Dawn of a New Day,” signifying Valve’s way of bidding farewell to the CS:GO era. Just a few hours before the launch, the header image was updated to say “The Dawn of a New Day,” confirming in a way that CS2 is approaching.

Furthermore, Twitch made a post on X that further strengthened the belief that the release date of CS2 is nearing. Twitch has now changed the name of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive category to Counter-Strike, representing the new era brought by the new CS2 game. Currently, both the Counter-Strike 2 limited test beta and CS:GO can be streamed under this updated category for Counter-Strike.

Counter-Strike 2 will be offered as a free update to CS:GO this summer, with extensive and fundamental changes to the game. Smoke grenades, for example, have been transformed into dynamic volumetric objects that interact with their surroundings, responding to light, gunfire, and explosions. This change will have a much greater impact on gameplay.

Valve highlights the most significant change in Counter-Strike 2 as being the sub-tick update frequency. Thus, what you see on the screen will be exactly what is happening at that moment. With Counter-Strike 2’s updated sub-tick architecture, servers will now know precisely when a move is made, a shot is fired, or a grenade is thrown, regardless of the tick rate, and your movements and shots will respond at the same speed.

Maps will also be revised or completely changed in Counter-Strike 2, resulting in clearer, brighter, and better maps. Valve has said that the redesigned maps will use Source 2 tools and image processing features, such as the Overpass and Nuke maps.

In addition, the Dust 2 map, another classic map well-known among FPS gamers, will also be revised. Valve emphasizes that classic maps like Dust 2 have been updated for better lighting and player visibility, but they will fundamentally remain the same.

The Source 2 tools and image processing features will be made available to map creators in the community to make map creation, experimentation, and design changes easier. The Source 2 Workshop will be added to Steam during the later stages of the closed testing process.

Your CS:GO inventory and skins will still be available in Counter-Strike 2. No weapons or skins will be lost, and with Source 2’s lighting and material improvements, they will look even better visually. In addition to supporting old models and coatings, all stock weapons have been updated with high-resolution models.

Valve has promised that the Counter-Strike 2 update will improve everything from the gameplay to the user interface in CS:GO.

The Wild Lotus skin was added to the game in 2019 and is one of the rarest skins in existence, with fewer than 3,000 in circulation and even fewer in “Factory New” condition. While a Factory New Wild Lotus skin would only cost around $10,000, this particular skin sold for over $150,000 due to the addition of four Reason Holo stickers from the Katowice 2014 CS:GO Major. These stickers are incredibly scarce and cost around $40,000 each today, making the buyer pay a premium for the skin.

The AK-47 Wild Lotus skin was sold on Buff, the biggest China-based marketplace for CS:GO trading. The buyer, a Chinese collector, is expected to display the skin at future Major events, where professional players may be allowed to use it. In fact, this very AK-47 was used by FaZe Clan player Twistzz in 2022, borrowing it from the previous owner.

While this sale is certainly impressive, it is not the most expensive skin or item in CS:GO. A Case Hardened 661 pattern with four Titan Holo stickers from Katowice 2014 is currently fielding offers of over $400,000, and the most expensive CS:GO item overall is a Case Hardened Karambit knife, valued at over $1.5 million. However, these high prices do not provide any gameplay advantage and are purely cosmetic, making them sought after only for their rarity and appearance.
