Message-Filled New Teaser Arrives for Mortal Kombat 1
A mysterious teaser related to Mortal Kombat has surfaced, suggesting that the series’ fans might be getting a Mortal Kombat 1 announcement soon. While details remain scarce, the video posted on the official Mortal Kombat Twitter account and by co-creator Ed Boon shows a clock ticking up from nine to 11, then skipping over the number 1 entirely and going straight back to one. Some are speculating that this could hint at a reboot for the franchise.

The previous game in the series, Mortal Kombat 11, ended with Fire God Liu Kang using Kronika’s hourglass to forge a new era for the Mortal Kombat universe. He successfully created a new timeline and went back in time to train Kung Lao’s ancestor for the upcoming Mortal Kombat tournaments.
This latest tease isn’t the first hint at a new Mortal Kombat game from developer NetherRealm, as a recent video celebrating 30 years of the franchise also included a possible hint at what’s to come. Additionally, during the Warner Bros. Q1 2023 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav mentioned a new Mortal Kombat game with a release date planned for 2023.
It remains to be seen where and when the official announcement for Mortal Kombat 1 will take place, but with events like Summer Games Fest and Gamescom Opening Night Live on the horizon, there are plenty of opportunities for news to drop. In the meantime, fighting game fans can look forward to the release of Street Fighter 6 from Capcom in June and the ongoing development of Tekken 8 from Bandai Namco.
Mortal Kombat fans can also potentially look forward to a return to theaters, as rumors have been circulating that Karl Urban may join the cast as Johnny Cage in the upcoming Mortal Kombat film sequel, alongside other returning characters from the 2021 film.
