Elon Musk’s new AI company, xAI, has introduced itself with a new website detailing its mission and team. Musk tweeted that the company’s goal is to “understand truth” without providing any further details or explanations.

According to the website, xAI aims to understand the true nature of the universe. The team is led by Elon Musk and includes members who have worked at other major names in AI, such as OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and recently joined Google’s DeepMind.

In addition to Musk, the website lists Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai as part of the xAI team. They are currently advised by researcher Dan Hendrycks, who manages the nonprofit organization AI Safety Center, aiming to reduce risks associated with AI at a societal scale.

The website states that the @xAI team will host a Twitter Spaces discussion on July 14th, where listeners can “meet the team and ask questions.” No specific time is provided. According to xAI’s website, the company is “separate” from Musk’s inclusive X Corp but will work closely with “X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies.” Musk recently joined Twitter Spaces but has seemingly imposed temporary limitations, attributing the change to the mining of data by large language models (LLMs) seeking information.

We first heard about xAI in April when filings indicated that Musk had established the company in Nevada. At that time, he was listed as the manager, and Jared Birchall, Musk’s family office manager, was listed as the secretary. Not much was known about xAI at the time, but reports suggested that Musk was seeking funding from SpaceX and Tesla to launch it.

Musk was previously involved in a major AI organization when he co-founded OpenAI in 2015. However, he distanced himself from the venture in 2018 to avoid conflicts of interest with Tesla, which was also heavily involved in the field. Since then, he has openly criticized OpenAI and stated to Tucker Carlson that he is working on building something called “TruthGPT.”

OpenAI has recently introduced its new language model, GPT-4, which is impressing and worrying people with its capabilities. This AI model has a multi-modal structure and has undergone significant improvements compared to its predecessor, GPT-3.5, eliminating its previous errors and accepting visual inputs, making its potential uses nearly limitless.

OpenAI, the owner of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Dall-E, has already released GPT-4 for public use. As previously reported, GPT-4 has been integrated into Microsoft’s new Bing for some time, and now it is available for everyone through a waiting list for the ChatGPT Plus version.

To showcase GPT-4’s capabilities, OpenAI has prepared a demo event, opening the door to endless possibilities. Regardless of the job you have, GPT-4 can provide significant benefits, but caution is advised concerning the accuracy of its answers.

Although GPT-4 is still far from being a AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) model, it is an incredible technology in its own right. For example, using GPT-4, it only takes 60 seconds to create Pong, one of the oldest arcade games from 1972. Merely asking the model for “the best language to make a Pong-like game and to use Replit to build it” is sufficient to make a game. However, its capabilities go beyond that.
Creating a legal case file with GPT-4 takes only a few minutes. In one example, a federal case was requested to be prepared using ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4, against someone making spam calls, with a requested compensation of $1500. Within a few seconds, ChatGPT produces a case file for you.

If that’s not impressive enough, OpenAI demonstrated a usage scenario during its demo event. GPT-4 can transform a small paper sketch into a functional website because, as mentioned earlier, it accepts visual inputs. In other words, by adding an image to the query, you can ask the model to create something similar or explain the image. In this scenario, a small joke website was created.

GPT-4 also has a much more exploratory structure. For example, it can discover a new drug by requesting it to do so. It is possible to provide GPT-4 with an existing drug and ask it to find similar compounds, which are not patented. It can even create an order form for the discovered compounds. This feature can be both good or bad, depending on the perspective. It is possible to use this feature maliciously, but ethical use can lead to incredible results.
