The long-delayed crowdfunded video game Star Citizen currently holds the record for the highest budget of any video game in history. Its price tag now exceeds the combined cost of Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Cyberpunk 2077. This marks the latest in a series of records broken by Star Citizen through its crowdfunding campaign. Star Citizen initially launched its Kickstarter campaign with a relatively modest goal of $2 million. The game was presented as the spiritual successor to Wing Commander games and was directed by Chris Roberts, the series’ lead. At this point, the development of Star Citizen and its single-player campaign Squadron 42 has been ongoing for over a decade.

The Most Expensive Game in History

In September 2022, Star Citizen’s crowdfunding budget surpassed $500 million. As of the time of writing, that figure has exceeded $591 million. And seemingly, there is still no release date for the game in sight.

To provide some perspective, Grand Theft Auto 5 had a budget of $137 million, Red Dead Redemption 2 around $170 million, and Cyberpunk 2077 approximately $174 million. This means that Star Citizen’s cost has now surpassed the combined budget of three of the most expensive video games of the past decade.

Uncertain Release Date

Star Citizen was already the most expensive video game ever made before reaching the $500 million mark. The only game that came close to its budget was BioWare’s MMO RPG Star Wars: The Old Republic released in 2011, which was estimated to have cost around $200 million to develop. However, that game at least provided players with some form of gameplay for a few years. It should be noted that Star Citizen has also provided players with some form of gameplay over the past few years.

The game’s initial version was launched in 2013. Since then, the developer has gradually updated the game, adding new content while encouraging players to purchase new ships. The latest update for Star Citizen was released in May, which, as usual, stirred some controversies of its own. The price tag of the game will likely continue to increase as more updates are released. Whether the game will ever see a full release on digital storefronts remains uncertain.
