The Guardian reports that the UK aims to use this supercomputer to develop AI technologies that can be used in various sectors, from healthcare to finance.Once the investment is completed, the UK will become one of the leading countries in AI technologies. According to reports, UK officials are currently concerned about falling behind in the AI industry, dominated by the US and China. BT Group’s Chief Data and AI Officer Adrian Joseph likened this to an arms race, saying, “This is a massive arms race that has been going on for some time, but it has certainly heated up in recent times.” UK Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt announced that he would allocate approximately £900 million to a large-scale supercomputer, stating that “Artificial intelligence needs computing horsepower.”

Recent developments in large language models (LLMs), such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other companies, have further intensified this race. The UK government is offering significant support packages for research and entrepreneurship to promote the growth of AI-related businesses in the country. BritGPT will enable much faster and more accurate processing of large data sets, allowing AI models to be trained more effectively.

A spokesperson for the UK Treasury said, “This investment will enable researchers to better understand climate change, empower the discovery of new drugs, and maximize our potential for artificial intelligence.” The £900 million investment also includes a £10 million annual fund for AI innovation. Additionally, research groups will compete for the “Manchester Prize,” a £1 million award for the most notable AI invention of the year. The prize is named after the Manchester Baby, the first computer built at the University of Manchester in 1948, and is awarded to the most significant AI invention of that year.
